Featured Specimen

Coticule ID:
n°071

Picture:
N°71

Characteristics:
Natural combo BBW/Coticule, with a captivating appearance and 3 color bands.
The surface has a grayish tone with bright, perfectly round spots. It evokes visions of interstellar nebulae in a nightly sky.

This is a small rectangular specimen, but it's perfectly suited for razor honing.

Coticule Dimensions:
100mmX40mm

Speed on slurry:
fast

Feedback on slurry:
This is a very fast Coticule, and it can be clearly felt while honing on slurry. There's the typical sound and feel of abrasion, together with a hint of stiction that helps to maintain good contact between the razor and the hone.

AutoSlurry:
no

Slurry Keenness Limit:
shaves arm hair well

Speed on water:
slow

Feedback on water:
There is the same feeling of abrasion as on slurry, albeit much less pronounced. Also the stiction remains. There are no immediate traces of steel removal in the water, but upon cleaning the blade with a paper tissue, black residue can be seen on the tissue. This suggest slow, but not dead slow, finishing properties on water. The surface has a very slight tendency to glaze, but this is only superficial and comes of when the surface is rubbed by hand.

Edge Qualification:
mellow

Background:
This Coticule was selected by me (Bart), during a visit at Ardennes, while I went through a stock of smaller hones, selecting visually attracting pieces. These little rocks are practically jewels in the eye of the Coticule lover I am, and with their limited cost (40 EUR at present), it is even for a non-collectioner as myself, tempting to start a small collection of various attractive Coticules. But they're not just for display. With their small size, they lay on the hand very easily and after some initial getting used to, they work as easily and efficiently as the longer Coticules.
