Hi,

I don't visit the forum every day and I log out when I'm done with reading. I don't use RSS to read posts (I tried but I somehow haven't got impressed so I gave it up) and I don't enjoy getting posts to my mailbox. I prefer to go to the portal, look around, read new posts and go out.
My problem is that next time I log in I don't remember when exactly I was here last time (yeah, yeah, I'm getting old, I know) :( . Of course there is the "Unread" link in The Cafeteria but it displays the whole threads. In case of vigorous discussions threads grow quickly and dozens on posts are created in quite a short period of time. After a few days of absence it's quite inconvenient to read threads in surplus to not loose anything from the discussion.

Would it be possible (and fairly trouble-free) to add previous login/logout info to the login message?
I mean something like:
You are logged in as maro.
Last login on dd.mm.yy at hh:mm. Logged out on dd.mm.yy at hh.mm.

I hope this way I'd be able to find easily the last read post in a long thread and could continue reading from that point.

Should it be too complex/impossible to implement or
should I be the only one with early symptoms of sclerosis on this forum or
should I miss some existing functionality that solves this issue or
should you simply find it useless or pointless... do not bother with it, please.

With best regards,
Marek

I think Marek's problem is a common one. I too have similar issues related to information overload. However, I do not know how (knowing) in/out times can help in managing the flood.

I find that I have to wade through a lot of smart-alecky and irrelevant statements to get to the kernel of threads. I confess I too am guilty of abusing things that way.

Couple of things come to mind.
  1. In many mailing lists, there is a custom of the person who starts the thread, later to summarize it.
  2. In some bulletin boards, side comments, thumps up, etc., run kinda parallel to the main thread.

It is frustrating to read an item once in an email and then again days later one needs to fish out the item at the end of some long thread before the coticule.be would recognize it as having been read.

Not really serious complaints. Whatever works easily ...
George

Log in time not really. True... :D
But as for log out time stamp, if I just have read all new posts and logged out... next time I log in and check log out time I can read the posts in "Unread" threads stamped later than that.
Or can't I..?

Yes, your solution, albeit a bit crude, would work, my friend.

I believe the functionality you ask for can be implemented. Give us some time to sort it out and we shall accommodate you.:)

I know the Cafeteria lacks some of the advanced functionality one can find on other fancy internet forums. As you know I personally consider this rather a blessing than a shortcoming. But I think a "go to last unread post" button, is not too much of a luxury, so we will see if what can be done about that as well. It will be a long shot, therefor we will first fix the login/logout date/hour.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Crude man, crude solution. ;) Ania's sweetness compensates my shortages in this matter.

Thank you very much but no hurry at all. I've survived without it since the forum establishment so, please, take your time.

I know and I trully appreciate your resistance to "Thank" button and other ego-inflating widgets. And any fancy I'm lookig for here is definitely not in the tool. (Huh, I'm getting affectionate).

We now added the last previous login date to the member login information.
I hope this makes your forum life a bit easier, Maro. ;)
The remark about crudeness was not aimed at your person (as I don't find you crude in any way), but to the crudeness of our forum software. A button that gave direct access to the first unread posts in thread would be so much more elegant for a solution, but alas! My programming skills are lacking too much to undertake such an endeavor.

Kind regards,
Bart.

Thanks a lot!!! I noticed it immediately when logging in today the first time after the holiday brake.
I know crudeness wasn't about me. I was just bantering a bit.
Don't worry about the lack of "The first unread post" button. It's a luxury I can easily live without.
