Gentlemen,

A little while ago I received a parcel from Revisor, Solingen. It contained 10 blades (6/8, full hollow ground), their highest end steel and grind, but without any further frills (the tangs are stamped, but no additional etchings). I also received 10 sets of plain black scales that are now attached to the razors, by use of microbolts.. This allows the scales to be easily detachable. It is a requirement for the future function of these razors, which is to serve as a test group for sharpening experiments. The advantages of using of identical blades for experimental purposes is obvious. I am familiar with the quality of Revisor and have no doubt that they are fully capable to hold the finest edges possible. As such, they will allow us more precise readings than, for instance, the Double Arrows we've been using so far. Credit goes to Robin (Beberlin) who has negotiated with Revisor about the price of the new test group and managed to cut us a favorable deal of 40 EUR per blade. With the scales, insured shipment and the microbolts added, the total price for the 10 was nearly 500 EUR.

We are now set for many years of future sharpening-, stropping- and shaving-experiments, during which period these razors will travel around the world and may likely end up at your doorstep one day, when you've agreed to take part in one of Coticule.be's future experiments.

For their maiden voyage, the razors will be divided in 3 groups of 3 razors. The groups will be identical, but within each group, their will be one razor finished on a different representative of 3 different Coticule layers. One group will travel to our member Babydom, who's going to make SEM images of the edges, up to 3000X. He will probably run some additional experiments, yet to decided upon. The other 2 groups will be passed along the research team of Coticule.be, to find out if there is any significance in how various shavers assess the edges. In the mean time, our resident mineralogist Woodash aspires to run XRD analysis on the 3 used Coticules.
By the time this first experiment completes, costs will probably add up to over 600 EUR.

In an attempt to reclaim some of that money, we are setting up a fund raising activity. But we can't do this without the help of our members.

You can do so in two different ways.

Most of us have shaving related stuff at home that sees little or no use. Perhaps you didn't like the scent of that soap your mother in low gave you last Christmas as much as you hoped, perhaps you discovered at some point that you actually prefer a small brush and now that big badger is sitting their unused, perhaps you won several items in one online auction but had only real interest in one particular item, perhaps you restore razors for a hobby and are not running short on storage space...
All that stuff can be donated to the Coticule.be fundraiser. We have a depot in the US, one in UK and one in Belgium. You can send your donation to the nearest depot. This is the first way in which you can help us out.

The second way is to bid on our Ebay auctions when we put the items up for sale. We will start a simultaneous thread in the Marketplace, with the title Fundraiser:<name of the item>. In that thread, you are invited to reveal the bid you've placed, so we can have a little extra fun while bidding. (Ebay lists your bids anonymously, and you are not obliged to reveal them if you don't want to, it's just something we thought will add to the fun).

The profit from selling all this stuff will serve to fund the expenses already made. In the unlikely event that we raise more than that, the assets will be used for future expenses. The safeguarding will be done by myself while the other associates will have full insight in the bookkeeping. It is by no means the intent that any person involved with this fundraising activity will gain personal profit from it.

If you have something to donate, please post it in this thread, if possible with a picture. One of the depot holders will contact you with shipment information. Please understand that we're not going to cover for your postage costs.

We are gathering stuff till the 15th of November. After that we'll take some time to shoot pictures and write proper item descriptions. The Ebay auctions will be held early December, right on schedule for you Christmas shopping. :)

Thank you for your consideration,
Rayman, Smythe, Ralfson & Bart.
Then the light shone, trumpets sounded and I got to the other side, where men shave with smiles on their faces, razors pop hairs, and a continuous choir singing «~~Keen and Smooth~~» is heard everywhere. (Matt)

Great timing. If it's alright, I'll throw in one of my homemade Bridal leather strops, and I've got a couple entry level razors i can throw into the deal. Nothing fancy, mind you...

I have quite a few vintage blades and other sundries that I bought when I first got started, too many to photograph. I imagine Ray will be my point of contact, but just let me know how to get you the stuff, Ray, or whoever, and I will send you a nice care package. Great idea, you crafty tonsorialists. Denny

As a rather fresh Straight Razor convert, I am afraid that I have nothing I can donate. Sorry for that Bart.

But luckily you have identified two ways in which we can contribute.
Be sure therefore that I will certainly make a bid on that Nakayama Nashii you are going to put on ebay, as well as on that 4 x 17.5 Les Latneuses

Just for clarity though, no way I am going to reveal my bids on these :P

I have to buy some knots anyway so I will try to get a brush done for this. I might have some extra wood scales sitting around too, but I don't know how just a set of scales will work out. I may have to dig around the old blade box for something to fit them.
Thanks for coming up with this. I like to support my fora in anyway possible. especially when it goes to something that will benefit the greater good.

Oh, what to contribute. I'll have to think about this. I'm guessing the closest person for me to send goods to is Ray as he's only a state over.

I'm guessing the UK depot is Ralfy. All I need is an address...
